Gates can trace their history to gatehouses. Gatehouses were constructed to protect the entrances of castles and even towns. They were fortified structures made of wood, then bricks and then iron. The gatehouses were not meant to be pretty but to serve a purpose.
Uses Of Gates
Gates now serve to either keep somebody or something in or out. They were also used to herd in livestock and keep the livestock from wondering off. Gates also help to mark or demarcate the boundary of a structure. They tell where the limit of a compound is and help to differentiate ownership of areas. Gates help give an artistic feel to the look of the house.
Gates also increase the security of a building because it narrows the point of entry to the building. It helps create a driveway to a building.
Structures Of Gates
Gates were originally made of wood but now most gates are made of iron. Gates now come with different patterns and design. Gates are built over a foundation to hold it in place and are most times the end feature of a wall or fence.
Static Or Dynamic
Gates had to be opened manually by a person normally called a gatekeeper. Sometimes, there was a gatehouse to house the gatekeeper. Technology has made it possible for gates to be operated automated. The gates open by means of hydraulic pressure or electromechanical systems. Hydraulic gates are more in use for heavy gates as hydraulic gates can deliver high pressure to move the large gates.
Types Of Automated Gates
Hydraulic or electromechanical, automated gates are differentiated by how they operate. The two main types of automated gates are the gates that swing open and the gates that slide open. The only difference between them is the factor of space. Automated swing gates are mostly used when there is enough space for the gates to swing open. Swing gates are used more in residential areas as more space can be allotted to the gates.
Sliding gates are used when there isn’t enough space for the gates to swing open. Sliding gates are used more often in commercial areas as most times, available space is a premium. Sliding gates save space because the gates retract or slide into itself and creates an opening for vehicles or people to go in or out.
Both the automated sliding and swing gates are controlled by the use of a remote control.
Gates help to make a compound more security as it limits the point of entry to the house. Having an automated gate controlled by a remote control gives even more security to the users. The remote control means that you can control your gate without physically touching the gates. This helps tremendously as there will not be any delay when you are accessing the house by stopping and getting out of the vehicle to open the gates. The time where one is exposed to risks or delays is reduced or removed completely.
Gates act as a safety zone or help create a protected zone. They also make the building structure look beautiful and endearing. An automated gate system gives you both safety and comfort.
